What Defines a Quality Steel Fence
The difference between a true steel fence and a cheap one is not subtle—it is structural,
chemical, and inevitable over time.
Material Thickness and Gauge
A quality steel fence begins with properly gauged steel. Thicker wall sections provide rigidity,
resist deflection, and maintain alignment over decades. Lightweight steel may look acceptable at installation, but it lacks the mass required to withstand wind load, impact, and long-term fatigue.
Fabrication and Joinery
Precision fabrication matters. Proper weld penetration, clean joints, and reinforced stress points determine whether a fence remains square and true or slowly distorts under its own weight. Poor fabrication is not cosmetic—it is a structural liability.
Surface Preparation
Steel fails not because it is steel, but because it is improperly prepared. Without rigorous surface treatment, corrosion begins long before it becomes visible. Inferior systems skip critical steps, accelerating deterioration from the inside out.
Protective Systems
Steel requires protection—always. High-performance coating systems, when correctly applied, form a barrier that delays oxidation and preserves structural integrity. Thin finishes and decorative coatings offer the appearance of protection without the performance.
We only work with steel systems that meet our internal requirements for gauge, fabrication quality, and long-term corrosion management. If a system relies on shortcuts, it does not meet the Tijou standard.

Environmental Considerations
Steel performs exceptionally well when placed in the right setting. In dry, inland, or controlled
environments, a properly protected steel fence can endure for generations.However, steel is not well-suited for constant salt exposure. Coastal air, marine environments,
and saltwater pools accelerate corrosion—even in coated systems. In these conditions, material
selection is critical, and alternatives should be considered.Our role is to guide clients toward choices that remain correct over time, not merely acceptable
at installation.
